Kiriyenko finally sails through on secret ballot
President Boris Yeltsin yesterday clinched a major victory against his detractors when the Communist-dominated Russian Duma approved his young protege Sergei Kiriyenko as Prime Minister in a cliff-hanger ballot, averting dissolution of the chamber and an early election.

Cong may dump khadi and cap
The stereotypical image of a Congress member, a man in khaki kurta and a Gandhi cap, may be on its way out. According to the party constitution, all Congress members have to wear khadi and stay off liquor. While the P A Sangma-led task force has suggested to president Sonia Gandhi that the first clause be dropped, it's silent on the second.

Russia no longer a developed nation, says UN report
Russia can no longer be counted among the ranks of developed nations on the basis of social development statistics, according to a UN-sponsored report released. Sponsored by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the report by a panel of Russian experts concludes that by the mid-1990s, Russia could no longer be ranked among the developed states by many parameters.

Minister to issue guidelines
The state department of higher education is preparing a circular detailing measures to plug the leakage of university answer-sheets and other forms of cheating during exams. The circular, to be released next week, would be sent to all universities in the state.

To Russia with no love
Unaids, a consortium of five UN agencies and the World Bank, laun-ched a campaign this week to combat the increasing AIDS epidemic staring the East European countries in their face. Inaugurating the programme, UNAIDS Executive Director, Peter Piot said a sharp rise in the use of drug needles is propelling a crisis in Moscow.
