MUMBAI, April 25: Advocate Rajendra Raghuvanshi was today unanimously elected chairman of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa, a statutory body regulating the activities of more than 40,000 professional advocates in the two states. Raghuvanshi was elected in the first meeting of 25 council members held after last month's general elections. The meeting was chaired by Advocate General C J Sawant, who functioned as acting chairman of the council for the last few months in the absence of an elected body. The meeting also elected Anjankumar Dey from Nagpur as its vice-chairman and Dilip Bhosale (Mumbai) as its representative on the Bar Council of India.
Raghuvanshi, who hails from Nandurbar in Dhule district, was practising in the High Court in Mumbai before shifting to Aurangabad recently. He was also assistant government pleader in Mumbai for eight years from 1988 to 1996. Besides, he was secretary and vice-president of the Advocates Association of Western India, the bar association of the advocatespractising on the appellate side of the High Court.
This is the first time a person from the backward Dhule district is heading the State Bar Council and almost 20 years since a practising advocate from Aurangabad was elected chairman of the State Bar Council.
