Stop this "cold war" between Centre & states, DMK tells PM

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Chennai, April 25: Countering the AIADMK demand for the dismissal of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government, the DMK executive on Saturday appealed to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee to ``stop the cold war between the Centre and the state governments and instead concentrate on nation-building activities.''

In one of the six strongly-worded resolutions, the party executive at the end of a two-hour long meeting at the DMK headquarters, vowed to oppose any move to destabilise the Tamil Nadu Government ``because of blackmail by vested interests.''

The executive took strong exception to the recent visit by a two-member Union Home Ministry team led by the then special secretary (home) Ashok Kumar to study the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu, and his subsequent transfer after he gave a clean chit to the state government. Such a recalcitrant attitude will ``undermine the efforts to strengthen federalism,'' the party said. If at all such a situation prevailed in a state, the Centre should help the stategovernment put down the extremist forces. Instead to ``indulge in anti-Constitutional and anti-federal acts was yet another kind of terrorism,'' the resolution noted.

Pointing out that while those in responsible posts like the prime minister had assured that Article 356 of the Constitution would not be misused, it said some leaders of the AIADMK and its allies, who were holding responsible posts in the Union ministry, were ``making irresponsible statements seeking the ouster of the DMK Government. Their statements are purely partisan, totally unsubstantiated and devoid of merit.'' The resolution further stated that it was unclear if Vajpayee would be swayed by such `blackmail'.

The executive further said there were reports of the activities of ISI in other parts of the country. For instance, two days ago, some ISI agents had been arrested with a lot of weapons in Delhi and Mumbai. ``Will the Union Home Ministry send fact-finding teams to these places?'' the party executive wanted to know.
