NCW summons Gill on newscaster's plea

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 25: Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati Board, S S Gill, has been asked to appear before the National Commission for Women (NCW) in connection with a complaint of discrimination.

Kaveri Mukherjee, a newscaster on Doordarshan, has alleged in a complaint to the NCW that Gill's decision to remove old newscasters has been limited to women and shows that he discriminated against them.

The NCW issued summons to Gill to appear in person before the Commission. But instead of coming himself, Gill sent a written reply expressing his inability to appear in person.

Gill in his reply to the NCW summons, offered to send the Director-General (News) Harish Awasthi in his place. The Commission rejected the proposal and is toying with the idea of issuing another summons for Gill's personal appearance. The NCW had in its summons asked Gill to present himself before the Commission on April 16. In his letter to NCW, Gill said there were 70 newscasters on the panel. After Prasar Bharati, it was notpossible to continue with a large panel and so the number had been reduced to 38. Denying charges of discrimination, he said those removed, included both male and female newscasters.
