Al-Umma enjoyed AIADMK support, alleges BJP report

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, April 25: The Al-Umma led by Syed Ahmed Batcha of Coimbatore "enjoys the support of various political parties including some ruling AIADMK leaders" alleged a 1995 report of the BJP's parliamentary delegation led by the (then) leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Sikandar Bakht after visiting Chennai on July 29 and 30, 1995.

The report, copies of which were circulated to the members of the Assembly by the Tamil Nadu government in connection with its reference in the White Paper on Coimbatore blasts, alleged that Al-Umma had been operating, attacking the members of Hindu organisations without any let or hindrance, and its "activities are known to the (AIADMK) government and the police".

"Though Batcha is now detained under TADA, even under detention he has been issuing pamphlets, justifying the terrorist activities. He is accorded a hero's welcome by the organisers of the known ISI outfit in Kerala called Islamic Sevak Sangh of Abdul Nasser Madani", the report said.

The report prepared bythe delegation sent by BJP leader Atal Behari Vajpayee (now Prime Minister), consisting of BJP MPs J P Mathur, Sushma Swaraj, Dhananjay Kumar and O Rajagopal, said TN was generally considered to be a bastion of peace and cultural traditions. "However, of late, there have been incidents taking place in the State which should cause grave concern".

About the mass conversion of Harijans to Islam in Meenakshipuram in Tirunelveli district, which later slowed down due to the Hindu community's reaction, it said the "organisers of conversion in collaboration with others of their ilk, flush with Gulf money, and backed by powerful and rich persons, began attacking the Hindu leaders". Later, Islamic outfits like Al-Umma and All India Jihad Committee led by Ahaaj Ahmed Ali alias Palani Baba were formed, which became the backbone of Islamic fundamentalism leading to spread of bomb culture in TN.

The Southern Sea coast in Ramanathapuram was ideally suited for smuggling activities and it was "a hotbed of not only Islamicfundamentalists but also of smuggling of narcotics and arms". Its proximity to Jaffna, a stronghold of LTTE, is noteworthy. "Witnesses have informed the team that the interaction of the LTTE and Islamic fundamentalists is the root cause of the spread of the bomb culture in Tamil Nadu".

The report charged that the powerful smuggler lobby had the administration under control. "The political climate in TN is marked by the influence of separatists Dravidian movement which is mostly based on anti-Hindu (views). Any pro-Hindu, nationalist activities is frowned upon by the powerful Dravidian parties like DK, DMK and MDMK. A section of the AIADMK, the present ruling party of the state, is also reported to have a sort of allergy towards Hindu organisations".

It alleged that "rampant corruption" had caused difficulties for Hindu organisations. Islamic fundamentalists, financed by the smuggler lobby, and international groups were able to "buy" the police and powerful political authorities. "This is the prime reasonthat the handful of Islamic fanatics could carry on the nefarious activities so openly and continuously for so many years and are widening their field". The fanatics were involved in dastardly activities.

On Palani Baba, it was said, he had been making provocative speeches against Hindu leaders and was reported to have threatened to blow up Shankaracharya Mutt in Kancheepuram. "No action is being taken against him. His letter appealing to the international Islamic community for funds to carry on his fight against Hindu organisations is widely distributed in Gulf countries. He is also working in collaboration with Kerala ISS chief Madani".

The report added: "Other political parties kept silent when Hindu organisations workers were attacked by the smuggler lobby and police prosecuted them."
