Central Rly halt Republicans

MUMBAI, April 25: Central Railway defeated Bombay Republicans 5-4 via the tie-breaker after regulation time ended 1-all in the Punjab & Maharashtra Co-operative Bank-sponsored Guru Nanak Devji Hockey Tournament at the Khalsa College ground, Matunga here today.

It was Bombay Republicans who took the lead in the 21st minute through Kamlesh Mukar but Central Railway equalised in the 50th minute through Edwin Moti. In the tie-breaker, Sukhdev Singh, Eldrin Bird, Edwin Moti and Rajesh Podetti were successful for Central Railway while Sunil Pereira, Kamlesh Kumar and Manoj Lokhande scored for Republicans.

In another match, the youghful Khalsa Gymmkhana defeated the experienced Mumbai Customs 4-3 via the tie-breaker after a goalless full time.

Khalsa Gymkhana goalkeeper, Kanan Bhasin stood tall for his team as Mumbai Customs piled up the pressure. He did well in the tie-breaker, saving Adolf Colaco's push. Manish Sen, Lawrence Naronha, Rajeev Choudhary and Hardeep Singh Saini were successful for the home teamwhile only Vijay Alphonso, Richard D'Mello and Taseem Sheikh converted for Mumbai Customs.

Tata Electric win

Tata Electric scored an emphatic 3-0 win over Young Challengers 3-0 in a Bombay Hockey Association-conducted First Division league match at the Mahindra Stadium here today. Tata Electric now have 16 points and are lying third behind leaders Mumbai Port Trust and Sports Authority of India, while Young Challengers have just seven.

With veterans, Clarence Lobo and CP Apanna in their ranks, Tata Electric started slowly. Their first goal came in the 17th inute when HH Kazmi scored from a pass off Apanna.

In the second half, Raju Magar made it 2-0 for the winners in the 50th minute. Apanna converted a penalty corner in the 64th minute to round off the tally.
