May 2: Top seed Pete Sampras was extended to two tie-breaks but did enough under difficult conditions to overcome unseeded Ramon Delgado of Paraguay and advance to the semifinals of the AT and T Challenge Clay court tennis tournament today.Sampras defeated 104th-ranked Delgado 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-3) to set up a battle with Spanish qualifier Alex Calatrava for a place in tomorrow's final.Second seed Jason Stoltenberg made quick work of an ailing Richy Reneberg to advance to the semifinals. Stoltenberg of Australia, a tournament finalist last year, committed numerous unforced errors in the first set and trailed 4-2 to Reneberg, exhausted by flu and a late match Thursday.
Playing in sunny, windy conditions, the 28-year-old Stoltenberg regained consistency to break back in game eight to even the set to 4-4. Two games later, he took the set 6-4. Stoltenberg finished off the second set in just 24 minutes and then served four aces for the victory.
