  Khmer Rouge splits as thousands flee to Thailand
The remaining forces of Cambodia's hardline Khmer Rouge guerrillas have split and are on the verge of defeat, a royalist Cambodian general said yesterday as thousands of villagers loyal to the rebels fled to Thailand to escape fighting. General Nhiek Bun Chhay said he was waiting for instructions from ousted Cambodian Prince Norodom Ranariddh on whether to accept a group of some 1,600 guerrilla defectors whom he said wanted to surrender to him.

Tiger cell rendered clawless
1994 - Responding, rather belatedly, to the indiscriminate poaching of tigers all over the country, the Union Environment Ministry sets up a Tiger Crisis Cell (TCC). 1997- In January, three days after being appointed a member of TCC, Navin M Rajeja shoots detailed questionnaire on the status of tigers to the authorities in all 23 sanctuaries and national parks covered under the Project Tiger...till date, however, heads of only seven parks have bothered to send their replies to the TCC.
50-yr-old woman abducts baby to prevent lover's marriage
A six-month-old infant, Sonu, who had been kidnapped from a Nehru Place, in New Delhi, jhuggi on April 21, 1998 was rescued last night from Aara town in Bihar. A 50-year-old woman and her son have been arrested in this regard. Sonu's father Mohammed Jahangir had registered an FIR in the Kalkaji police station when he found both Sonu and his nine-year-old son Shamim missing.

Women's panel plea may be rejected
The state government is preparing to shoot down the State Women's Commission's imminent recommendation for getting the CBI to probe the politically sensitive Kozhikode sex racket case. Top Government circles indicated that the Government might use either or both of the options it thinks it has, once the Commission puts up the recommendation, probably by May 7.
