Exclusive residental school opens at Pune

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Pune, May 4: Tucked away in an elbow of the picturesque Sahyadris, the B K Birla Centre for Education in Ghaunje and Shirgaon villages in Pune district hopes to mould young minds in the cradle of learning.

Focusing on all-round, peson-centered development, the exclusive residential school began conducting admissions on April 25, throwing its portals open to 240 boys for the academic year commencing in June this year.

During the inauguration function at the sprawling 62-acre campus on May 2, Managing Committee member Rajendra Dalmia said the school will initially admit 240 boys from Std IV to VII in the first year. In the second phase, the school will open classes from VIII to XII, raising its student strength to 720. The teacher-student ratio will be 1:12, says Dalmia, who added that Rs 28 crore will be spent in two phases.

For an annual fee of Rs 80,000, students can avail of facilities like yoga, martial arts, indoor and outdoor games. A sports complex with a gymnasium, horse riding, health centre, swimming pool and an auditorium will also be built. Dalmia said the campus will also house a temple.

Applicants will have to take an admission test (in English, mathematics, a second language and general knowledge). The date and venue will be stated at the time of registration. However, filling the registration form does not guarantee admission, nor is the admission fee of Rs 1,000 refundable.

The Rs 80,000 fee per annum includes lodging. There will also be a one-time security deposit of Rs 15,000.

Registration forms are available in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and Calcutta. In Mumbai they can be collected from Century Mills, Worli.

Residential facilities include two self-sufficient hostel blocks of two floors each, with a total built-up area of 54,336 sq ft. Each hostel can accommodate 144 students along with a self-study room and a recreation centre.

The syllabus has been fashioned on the basis of the Central Board of Secondary Education curriculum though affiliation will be secured by the time theinstitution expands up to Std X.
