May 4: After putting the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) under the command of Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy in his fight against the BJP-led government at Centre, the RJD today formally launched its attack by demanding the resignations of the Central ministers alleged to have involved in the Babri demolition case. The RJD general secretary Ram Kripal Yadav said that the party would not succumb to the threats of dismissal of the Rabri government and the party was ready to take on the BJP-Samata party combine. It was on May 1, Laloo Prasad Yadav assured his total support to Swamy. During their 45-minute meeting, Laloo advised Swamy to spearhead his movement and placed his 17-member strong RJD's Lok Sabha representatives at his disposal.
Ram Kripal Yadav announced that they would organise a sit-in demonstration on May 9 at the pedestal of Ambedkar statue here demanding the resignation of the ministers. This was only the beginning, he said. The sudden hardening of posture by Laloo Prasad came as a majorsurprise in the political circle. All along, he refrained from issuing statements against the central BJP leadership, notwithstanding the fact that Samata party leadership has been seeking the dismissal of the government. With the BJP-Samata combine gearing up to consolidate their position in Bihar and particularly Samata party emerging as a potential threat to RJD, Laloo Prasad has now switched over to offensive politics. The only option left to him now is to join forces against the BJP-led government at Centre.
Ram Kripal Yadav is being assisted by the legal brain of the party Shakeel Ahmed Khan and the RJD is also exploring the legal avenues to proceed against such ministers.
The involvement of Laloo in fodder scam being a deterrent for RJD to take on the BJP-Samata combine on the political platform, the party leadership is trying to pursue the legal course. Yadav and Khan pointed out that under the IPC there were provisions for debarring such ministers in contesting the elections. They would take upthis matter before the court, they said.
For Laloo, the move of Swamy has come as a boon in disguise. It has come at a time when his electoral allies were out of reckoning and no one mustered courage to initiate any movement against Atal Behari Vajpayee government. However, his detractors were not ready to buy his political moves. They felt that in order to divert the public attention and to keep the focus out of his secret understanding with the BJP leadership and also to keep his rank and file in good humour, he has resorted to this tactics.
