Gill accused of financial mismanagement

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
Hyderabad, May 4: Vice-President of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) T Jesudanam today termed as ``ill-timed'' the Federation's annual general body meeting (AGM), scheduled to be held here on May 10, as it may have adverse effect on the team's performance in the World Cup at Netherlands from May 20.

In a six-page appeal to various associations affiliated to the IHF, Jesudanam said the meeting scheduled to elect new office bearers of the IHF was very much in advance as the term of present members expires only in June.

He alleged that IHF had not conducted even a single AGM meeting for the last four years. Jesudanam demanded that the executive committe approve the venue and date of the AGM.

``If the administration, which has to motivate the Indian team to scale new heights should suffer such sense of permission and insecurity, can we reasonably expect good results?,'' he questioned.

After being elected as the president, KPS Gill promised that his policies would be centred around the players and wouldrebuild the hockey team from the grassroot level, unravelling the vast talent in abundance in the country side. Nothing was done yet,'' he said.

He said the IHF had paid Rs 25,000 each to the players of the 1994 Sydney World Cup, which had finished fifth. Jesudanam said this was the last time the Indian team players were paid.

The IHF was forced to pay Rs 20,000 for the recently concluded Indo-Pak hockey Test series and the home and away series only after the players staged an agitation before they left for Pakistan.

``Jyothikumaran promised to pay Rs 25,000 to each player during the Champions Trophy held at Chennai, but had not paid the amount till date. This affected the player's morale and performance,'' he said.

Jesudanam said Gill had hosted a lunch to honour the World Cup (1994) team which returned from Sydney after securing the fifth place. But not even a small tea party for the Indian junior team which finished runners-up in the the junior World Cup in Milton Keynes in 1997.

He alleged thatseveral decisions regarding the appointment of coaches, selections and other decision had been taken without the consent of the IHF executive committee.

Jesudanam, who was the manager of the Indian team for the Sydney World Cup, said in his report, he had mentioned deficiencies of coach Cedric D'Souza way back in March 1995, but the IHF reacted only after the debacle of the Indian hockey team in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

``But for securing a fifth position in the Sydney World Cup in 1994, the 1997 junior World Cup runner-up performance by the junior team and winning the Azlan Shah Trophy nothing could be achieved in other tourneys,'' he said.

Jesudanam alleged that Gill had mismanaged funds provided by the International Hockey Federation and no accounts had been maintained for the same. A large sum was spent for comforts of officials rather on the players, he charged.

The present body in the last four years had earned a dubious distiction of holding the senior National and the Federation Cup once ,the junior nationals twice and the sub-junior nationals once.
