Colombo rejects Tiger ceasefire

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
Colombo, May 4: Sri Lanka today dismissed a Tamil Tiger rebel ceasefire as a propaganda ploy even as a top UN official began investigating the impact of the war on children.

Defence Ministry spokesman Sarath Munasinghe said the military had to fight the separatist LTTE because in April 1995 the guerrillas pulled out of an earlier ceasefire after 100 days. ``We are fighting only because the ltte broke the cease-fire in 1995,'' Munasinghe said, responding to a rebel announcement yesterday that they will observe a two-day truce on Wednesday and Thursday.
