One dead, eight injured in mishap

SURAT, May 4: One person, employed as a panch in the city prohibition department, died and eight others, including an inspector with the striking force, were injured when the tempo in which they were travelling rammed against a truck near Hindolia village of Bardoli taluka of the district early on Monday. All the injured were admitted to the New Civil Hospital after they were first taken around to the Sardar Hospital at Bardoli.

According to the district police, Shaikh Nissar Shaikh Momin died while being moved to the Bardoli hospital.

The injured were identified as PI B R Shirsat, head constable Madhubhai, constables Jagannath, Kannagadh, SRP jawan Vinayak Ramdas, Shankarlal Mangalram, Mohammed Rafiq Shaikh and Iqbal Qadar. The truck-driver, who was also injured, was admitted to the Sardar Hospital and is reported to be out of danger.

The police were on a trip to Songadh when their Tata Tempo GJ 5 G 428 was hit by a cylinder-laden truck approaching from the other direction. PI Shirsat of the prohibition police, who was also present in the tempo, registered a complaint in the Bardoli police station immediately afterwards.
