Addict murders father, sister-in-law

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SAS NAGAR, May 4: In a gruesome incident, a 35-year old resident of Industrial Area Phase-VI reportedly murdered his father and sister-in-law following an altercation with them, here last night.

According to the police, the accused, Ravi Shankar is a narcotic addict and had demanded money from his 25-year old sister-in-law, Veena Kumari who had expressed inability to do so. This angered Ravi, who was then allegedly in an intoxicated state and in the ensuing altercation, he began to stab her with a sharp-edged weapon, police added.

On hearing her screams, Ravi's 60-year old father Anant Ram, who was sleeping nearby, rushed to her aid. Ravi, however, stabbed him too. In the meantime, Veena's husband, Pardeep, who was visiting some associates in Chandigarh returned home. He along with another person managed to overpower Ravi.

Meanwhile, one of the neighbours reached the nearby police post and informed the duty staff about the incident. The SHO of the Phase-I Police Station rushed to the spot with a police party. The accused, who had managed to give the slip to his brother and neighbours, was arrested after being chased by the police, the district police claimed.

The victims, who were bleeding profusely from multiple stab wounds were rushed to the PGI by neighbours. While Veena succumbed to her wounds on the way, Anant Ram died at 3.15 this morning, medical sources said.

A post mortem examination was carried out at the PGI and the report is awaited, police added.

Neighbours say that Anant Ram had set up a service station in Phase VI near their residence for Ravi and had also bought him a car. The car was being used as a taxi.

The accused has three brothers. While one of them, Rajender Kumar stays at their ancestral home in Jalandhar, the other two, Pardeep and Sunil reside here. Veena was married to Pardeep.

According to the Superintendent of Police, SAS Nagar, B S Randhawa, a case has been registered against Ravi Shankar under Section 302 for murder and further investigations are on.
