CHANDIGARH, MAY 4: Panjab University has postponed the entrance test for admission to MBBS examination, following the decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in striking down the clause pertaining to students who have studied in institutions situated in Chandigarh. The other entrance tests which were to be conducted along with the MBBS test will, however, continue as scheduled. The test for admission to Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.), Bachelor of Chemical Engineering, Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.), Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S.), Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (B.H.M.S.), Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm.), and B.Sc. (Hons. School) will be held on May 15 and 16.
The date of the MBBS examination and the changes in the eligibility clauses will be notified later.
PU officials said that this was necessitated subsequent to a decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court following a petition filed by a student, Kiran Dixit. A final decision regarding the dates of the entrance test and the eligibility criterion will be announced only after framing new guidelines regarding eligibility, an official added.
The case was filed by Kiran Dixit after the Chandigarh Administration decided that for admission to Government Medical College, Sector 32, the applicant must ``have passed both +1 (Class 11 ) and +2 (Class 12) examination from schools/colleges recognised by the Chandigarh Administration and situated in the U.T. of Chandigarh, as regular students of the said schools/colleges with 50 per cent marks in the aggregate of physics, chemistry.''
The High Court struck down the words ``and situated in the U.T. of Chandigarh, as regular students of the said school/colleges'' mentioned in clause 1 (b) of the notification. It has held that it is examining only the validity of the particular course and that the authorities can make an amendment in the clause in such a way that brings it in conformity with law.
Since Panjab University was also a party to the above case and the entrance test for admission to the MBBS course was to be conducted by PU, it has been decided to postpone the test.
