`Middlemen' remanded to judicial custody

CHANDIGARH, May 4: Alleged middlemen in the UT Engineering Department kickbacks case, Suresh Kumar Sharma, Dinesh Sharma and Sunil Kalia, were remanded to judicial custody till May 16 by UT Judicial Magistrate (Ist Class) Jasbir Singh, here today.

The Sharma brothers had surrendered before the court on April 27, while Kalia had surrendered a day later. The three were booked by the Vigilance Department under the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 406, 409, 420 and 120 B of the IPC after their residence was raided by the income tax authorities in November 1997.

According to the prosecution, certain diaries mentioning the names of UT Administration officials receiving illegal gratification along with the amount, were recovered during the raids.

The accused were involved in offering kickbacks while supplying electrical and public health goods to the Engineering Department, the prosecution had added. The defence counsel, on the other hand, had stated that the accused were liaison officers.Meanwhile,an application seeking seven-day police remand for the Sharma brothers and another application seeking 10- day police remand for Kalia, was moved by the prosecution today. Both applications were, however, declined by the magistrate.Another application seeking handwriting specimen of the Sharma brothers was also moved by the prosecution. The defence counsel, however, refused to do the same. They contended that several documents had already been written and signed by the duo.
