Varun lift Pethankar under-15 trophy

May 4: Varun Divekar came up with a fine performance defeating Somitra Majumdar with ease in the eighth and final round to lift the Arvind Pethankar memorial under-15 title concluded at the Nehru Stadium recently.

Varun aggregated a total of 6.5 points from the possible eight. Saurabh Deshpande conformed second place for himself when he hold Ashish Damdhere on the second board, collecting 6.5 points.

Harshal Deshpande, Chaitanya Shivade and Amruta Mokal were placed joint third.

Yash Aggarwal, Somitra Majumdar and Mohit Aggarwal were adjudged as the best players in the under-12, 10 and 8 age group, respectively.

The organisers Janseva Smiti also conducted a Rapid Chess tournament of five rounds, in which International Master Chandrashekar Gokhale emerged winner by amassing 4.5 points with a win over Ketan Khaire (3.5) in the final round.

Under-15: Varun Divekar (6.5) beat Somitra Majumdar (5); Saurabh Deshpande (6.5) drew with Ashish Damdhere (5.5); Harshal Deshpande (6) bt Chaitanya Shivade (6); Amruta Mokal (6) bt Yash Agarwal (5); Tanmay Rajpathak (5.5) bt Akash Metha (5).

Best player under-12: Yash Aggarwal. Best player under-10: Somitra Majumdar. Best Player under-8: Mohita Agarwal. Rapid Chess winner: Chandrashekar Gokhale (4.5).

Mixed luck for Al-Sabha

It was a mixed luck for the Al-Sabha teams, on the opening day of the International Communication cricket tournament, at the Poona Club here today.

Their Juniors went down to Ajinkya by 22 runs while their seniors notched up a 11 run win over Falcon. Chasing a moderate score of 115 for victory Al-Sabha juniors were bundled out for 92. And later their seniors clipped the wings of Falcon emerging 11 runs victor.

TT workshop from May 6

Symbiosis Spa has organised a workshop on `Table-Tennis Technical Quality Improvement at the Sha Sports Complex from May 6. The two-day workshop will be opened for players, coaches and umpires with an objective to give an in-depth information on the new laws of the sport.

A M Lele, international expert, will be the resource person, according to the press note issued by Symbiosis Spa's director Dr S S Thigale, here today. PDFA president to quit

The Poona District Football Association's president Pratap S Jadhav has submitted his resignation from the post.

At the annual PDFA league valedictory function, Jadhav, who has been with the association for two terms (six years) said, that he would relinquish his charge due to personnel reasons. The PDFA secretary Chetan Chavan said that his letter of resignation has not yet accepted, but will be decided in the Executive meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
