The Pune lad Akshay, who went into lead 3-2 by breaking Abedim in the fifth game, had problems with the heat and his form. ``It's almost four months that I am gettig to play any tournament,'' he said. Abedim levelled back immediatly (3-3) and the match went on with serve till the tenth game.

Akshay had another chance to lead, 7-5, enjoying a break in the 11th and holding his serve in the 12th. But, his joy were brought down once again immediately by the fighting Abedim, as the Mumbai boy successfully hold his serve in the 13th and surprised the top seed by breaking him (Akshay) in the next to equalise 7-7. In the tie-breakier, however, Abedim run out of steam and after a fight till 4-4, he threw in the towel. Though, Akshay saved himself from an early round exit, however, the same section saw two seeded players ending their campaign in the first round only. The biggest casulty being the second seed Zubin Shetty of Mumbai and the eighth seed Ashay Deshmukh also of Mumbai. And the common feature about boththe upsets being the two city lads -- Gautam Padmanabhan and Sworag Bhosale -- enjoying their victories with an identical scoreline verdict of 8-6.

Two more upsets were recorded on the first day of the main draw. Another Pune boy, unseeded Shashank Kulkarni brought down the challenge of seventh seed Imran Allana of Mumbai 9-4 in the boys under-14 round, while the boys under-10 section saw the fourth seed Kaushal Mahale of Mumbai shown the door by unseeded Bhushan Sardesai from Sangli 7-6 (7-4)
