NEW DELHI, May 4: Virendra Narain Singh has been appointed the new police commissioner of Delhi. He will replace Tilak Raj Kakkar who has been transferred to the National Security Guards (NSG) as the Director-General.Singh, who has been serving as a Senior Additional Commissioner of Police in Delhi, will formally take over from the present incumbent tomorrow. The order appointing Singh as the police commissioner was issued late this evening, according to a home ministry official. It also ends months of speculation about Kakkar's tenure after Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma made no bones about his dislike for Kakkar's style of functioning on several occasions. Verma, in fact, announced at a press conference three weeks ago that Kakkar would be replaced very soon. When Express Newsline contacted Kakkar tonight, he said: ``I have heard about the order, but I have not seen it so far.''And about his new posting, he said: ``I will accept whatever the government decides.''
The orders are scheduled to reach the police headquarters early tomorrow, following which Singh will take over from Kakkar. Singh, however, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
A 1966 batch IPS officer from the Union Territory Cadre, Singh has served as the senior most Delhi police officer next only to the Commissioner during Kakkar's tenure and that of his predecessors Nikhil Kumar and M.B. Kaushal.
Singh's name was finalised because of his rich administrative experience. Singh has also served in various capacities in the Delhi Police and elsewhere including a stint with the All India Radio, Delhi as the Deputy Director (administration).
He has held sensitive posts such as Additional Commissioner of Police (CID) with additional charge of the Crime Branch, besides serving as DCP (North) and DCP (Security) during his tenure in Delhi.
He has also served as I-G of Police, Chandigarh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
