Varsity reprieve on missed exam

Sudeshna Chatterjee
MUMBAI, May 19: In an unprecedented move over 20 final year BCom students will be allowed to a write their optional paper after they missed the examination at the SIWS NR Swamy college examination centre last week due to unspecified gap in communication between the university and the students. The decision on the fate of the college students, who would otherwise have missed a year, was taken at the Board of Examiners' meeting held today, stated Vice Chancellor Dr Snehalata Deshmukh.

The Pro Vice Chancellor DrNaresh Chandra will decide the date of the rescheduled examination. The new date will be announced in newspapers and the respective college notified, said the VC. This is unlike the normal procedure where the examination centre is given the responsibility of communicating any information regarding examinations to the students.

In a letter addressed to the University VC, 22 of the aggrieved students from various colleges had said a `miscommunication' had occurred about one of their paper`Entrepreneurship and Management in Small Scale Industry'. This paper was originally scheduled to be held on May 8. The students however alleged that they were informed about the cancellation of all the papers on May 8 which were rescheduled for May 13. The goof up came to light when the students arrived at their examination centre, on May 13 when the principal told that the their paper was already been conducted on May 8.The principal had denied that the college was responsible for the missed paper maintaining that the students were told to check the notice board for university circulars about cancellation of `some papers'. However, Dr Deshmukh felt that that adequate measures had not been taken to highlight the changes in examination schedule.

``In the maze of several circulars on the board, the students anxious as they were prior to examinations could have missed this particular circular''. She clarified that only those students who failed to appear on the scheduled date would be allowed for theexamination.

The VC emphasised that, similar to the Ruia college students' case, this would be a special case which cannot be treated as a precedent. In the Ruia case, final year degree students were given the permission to appear for their examination in spite of not having the requisite attendance percentage. They had launched a stir when one of their colleague was allowed tofill up her exam form. Though it was an exception in the case of Ruia college, Deshmukh said, ``We did not allow the agitating students from Sophia and Hinduja colleges since we found no case of discrimination.''The Board of Examiners has taken a serious note of such goof ups in the current final year bachelor examination.

Earlier, 23 final year BCom students had found that the question paper for English literature (optional) was based on the old syllabus. The varsity had postponed the examination from the earlier May 4 to May 14. About 70 TY BSc (statistics) students have complained to the VC of delay in issuing them the papers. The VC said the Board has decided to hold the four deputy registrars of the varsity accountable for any lapses in the exam schedule. The nine faculties will be distributed among them. They will form their own team to oversee the entire process of paper setting right from conceptual stage to its final despatch to the exam centres.
