SKS move into final

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, May 19: Saraswati Kanya Sangh (SKS), Nagpur, finished with a clean record in the round-robin league matches in the Mahendra Pratap Sharada Prasad Memorial Trust-sponsored Women's invitational Basketball tournament at the Fatima School courts, Vidyavihar, to move into the final. They will meet Ajinkya Gymkhana, Satara, who won four of their five matches.

The only point of interest of today's matches was to see who joins Ajinkya in the final. That issue was settled in the morning itself when SKS defeated Ajinkya 59-49. The Fatima SC-SKS clash later in the evening then became of only academic interest. Fatima had to defeat SKS by a huge margin. Instead they lost by a 29-point margin (67-38).

In the Ajinkya-SKS match in the morning, the players from the Satara team appeared slow in their movements. And as SKS took the lead, Ajinkya started attempting long range shots, which predictably did not find the target. But, having qualified for the final, Ajinkya could have expected to play a relaxedgame.

In the evening game, SKS were too good for the home team, Fatima. Only for a brief period, when they went on a 20-5 run and bridged SKS's lead from 22-2 to 27-20, did the match appear to be running close. But SKS soon shut all escape routes for Fatima and predictably ran away easy winners.

Results:

SKS 59 (Sonal Kavde 21, Neelambari Kane 12) bt Ajinkya Gymkhana 49 (Pradnya Mane 11, Arnika Gujar 17, Mithila Gujar 14); SKS 67 (Sonal Kavde 20) bt Fatima SC 38 (Ami Momaya 12); Agredneya Vyayamshala 37 (Gayatri Manolikar 14, Manisha Kaprekar 14) bt Satara Gymkhana 18 (Kanchan Nalawade 14).
