Deals with Pak are off, Kremlin tells weapon-producing units

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
MOSCOW, May 27: In a bid to prevent proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, Kremlin has banned several countries including Pakistan from entering into any deals with Russian companies manufacturing lethal arms. Besides Pakistan, the list also includes Iran and North Korea. However the sources did not specify the nature and extent of trade being conducted by firms from these countries. They only said that the federal security service, the former KGB, had circulated a note to all state agencies responsible for the operation of weapon-producing enterprises to make no deals with the countries on the list.

Last weekend, the official media gave no details about the summoning of Moscow based Pakistani envoy to the Russian foreign ministry but it is presumed that talks between the Russian minister and the envoy centred around Kremlin's opposition to Islamabad's nuclear ambitions.

Meanwhile, Moscow has once again displayed understanding for India's concern over China's nuclear prowess. In a long commentaryon Asian Pacific affairs, Voice of Russia radio station referred to Beijing-Islamabad collaboration in the defence field and also spoke of two wars India fought with Pakistan on the Kashmir issue and the 1962 border conflict with China.

Pointing to the precautionary measure being adopted by Russia in preventing foreign firms from acquiring defence technologies, Russian news agency mentioned that many of the Russian firms are fund starved.
