SURAT, May 27:Two notorious criminals, involved in bootlegging, rioting and a number of other anti-social activities were arrested on Wednesday under the provisions of the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA) and sent to serve sentences in the Vadodara and Rajkot jails, the police said.According to official sources, the Prevention of Crime Branch (PCB) police led by PI Devendra B Bhatt of the city took into custody Dhansukh Sunderlal Modi, a resident of the slums behind railway station, said to be involved in various serious offences in the past few months. He also had police cases registered against him in the Mahidharpura, Katargam and Varachha police stations.
Bhatt, after obtaining the required permission from the city police commissioner, arrested Modi and sent him to the Vadodara jail.
The other criminal to be arrested under PASA was Iqbal Baig alias Ima Massu Baig. According to information, Baig was said to in possession of deadly weapons as well as involved in a number of rioting cases in the Mithi Khali and its surrounding areas. According to the Limbayat police, Baig had been declared an absconder after he was accused of being involved in a case of rioting and arson a couple of months back.
Limbayat Police Inspector M V Zala, along with a group of policemen arrested Baig and sent him to the Rajkot district jail to serve a sentence.Police commissioner Maniram, while justifying the PASA arrests said on Wednesday that both the criminals were a threat to the law and order in the society.
