JALANDHAR, May 27: A condolence meeting called by the Mayor of Jalandhar Municipal Corporation to mourn the death of Rajasthan Governor Darbara Singh and a Municipal councillor turned into a slanging match between the councillors and the mayor.The councillors belonging to Akali Dal, Congress and the BSP held centre- stage once the mayor had adjourned the house after observing two minutes silence. G.S Narula, the senior deputy mayor was asked by the leader of the Congress group, Raj Kumar Gupta, to occupy the mayor's chair.
Later, 33 councillors belonging to the Congress, Akali Dal, BSP, BJP and some independents held a separate condolence meeting after Narula had occupied the mayor's chair.
Earlier, the condolence motion moved by the mayor was responded to by the BJP and independents, while the remaning 33 councillors kept on sitting and indulged in slogan shouting against the mayor and the commissioner. They were demanding fixing of the next meeting before taking up the condolence motion, however, the mayor did not respond.
Suresh Sehgal, the mayor who belongs to the BJP, was opposed by the coalition partner- the Akalis. The BSP members and three BJP councillors also opposed him. Sehgal, later told mediapersons that some councillors had uprooted mike from his chair and broken his table glass.
He said he would write to the BJP high command to take disciplinary action against the three BJP concillors, who also indulged in slogan shouting against him.
Later, Narula led the Akali councillors and Gupta led the Congress councillors to hold a dharna outside the office of the mayor. The group of 33 councillors have sent a complaint to Local Bodies Minister Balramji Dass Tandon against the mayor, the sources said.
