Congress councillors want Rajiv Gandhi pool opened

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, May 27: Congress councillors have called upon the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) to reopen the Rajiv Gandhi Swimming Pool on Waghodia Road at the earliest.

In a letter to Municipal Commissioner Anil Mukim, Kanchanbhai Parmar, Shailesh Mehta, Chirag Zhaveri and former councillor I D Patel said it was unfortunate that the VMC had not allocated any amount for maintenance of the pool, which was built at a cost of Rs 42 lakh.

Inaugurated by the then Mayor Daluskh Prajapati on May 21, 1992, it was closed soon after, reportedly due to lack of facilities, including financial allocation, claimed the councillors.

The councillors said for the last six years, the VMC had not only lost revenue of Rs 18 lakh, but had also denied residents of the area, particularly children, access to the facility.

The city fathers reminded the Corporation that the pool tiles, and the toilets needed to be repaired. According to them, the filtration plant also needed to be overhauled.

Slum-dwellers
: City Congress chief Ashwin Shah and partymen Kanchanbhai Parmar, Shailesh Mehta, I D Patel and Kamalkant Pandya have urged the VMC not to shift residents of the Jayramnagar and Jivannagar slums on the Waghodia road without providing alternative arrangements.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Congressmen asked the VMC to provide alternative sites to all those who were to be displaced from their current place of residence.

They also warned the Corporation that it would be entirely its responsibility if the city was water-logged during the monsoon. Alleging that the storm water drains were not cleaned properly, they demanded that proper action should be taken to prevent the city from turning into what they described as hell.
