At one time, the barasinga or swamp deer that made the Kanha National Park famous was threatened with near extinction. An American wildlife conservationist donated $3,000 and the Indian government granted Rs 60,000 toward their conservation. The results were stunning. In 1970, there were just 66 barasingas, by 1973, their number increased to 118 and at end of 1979, there were 344 barasingas in Kanha.
