Amruta shocks top seed Tania

AHMEDABAD, May 31: Committing a tactical blunder, top-seeded Tania Sachdev of Delhi was comprehensively beaten by 15th seed Amruta Mokal (Maharashtra) in the girls under-12 in the seventh round of the 11th Centurion Bank National Childrens Chess Championships at the Indian Institute of Management Campus here on Sunday.

Despite this loss, Tania still leads the table with 7.5 points while Amruta is on 6.5 points. Even a draw will ensure that Tania goes home with the trophy as nobody is anywhere near her.

Amruta began with e4 and Tania replied with Pelican Variation of Sicilian Defence. Amruta playing with white won a pawn and did not allow Tania to castle her King. Tania messed up with a queen move and resigned immediately.

In the same section Baisakhi Das of West Bengal defeated M Kasturi of Tamil Nadu and N Vinthuna of Andhra Pradesh swept past V Aishwarya of Tamil Nadu. M Priyadarshini of Tamil Nadu beat Aravinda Lochani of Maharashtra.

In the boys under-12, top-seeded P Harikrishna of Andhra Pradeshdefeated Saptarshi Roy of Goodricke National Chess Academy, Calcutta and was leading the board with 7.5 points. He needs a draw to make sure of his title. Koneru Humpy also from Andhra Pradesh was held to a draw by Nilabh Upadhyay of West Bengal. Humpy has seven points.

In the boys under-14 section, second-seeded Valay Parikh of Gujarat continued to lead the table with 7.5 points after defeating Puneet Jaiswal of Rajasthan in a tough encounter. Valay with an another win is now virtually assured of the title. Top-seeded MR Venkatesh of Tamil Nadu was way behind with 5.5 points after beating P Laxminarasimhan.

In the girls section, K Preethi of Tamil Nadu was leading with six points. Kerala's N Sandhya, who lost to Preethi, is on 5.5 points.
