NEW DELHI, May 31: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has asked the government to bring forward a legislation to make marriage registration mandatory and bride burning a criminal offence.NCW chairperson Mohini Giri said, ``We have made several recommendations for removal of lacunae in our laws and suggested introduction of new legislations to curb domestic violence and incidents of eve-teasing.''
The recommendations include a comprehensive Marriage Bill making registration mandatory, codification of criminal laws to make bride burning a criminal offence and removal of ``anomalies'' in labour laws, said Giri.
Referring to the Apex Court ruling on harassment of women in workplaces, she said, ``No amount of legislation and court rulings can help end harassment of women. What is important is to change the people's mindset. The law and judgments can only act as deterrents and help change mindsets.''
