70 per cent turnout in Adampur election

Vishnu Dutt
MANDI ADAMPUR , June 3: About 70 per cent of over 1.21 lakh voters exercised their franchise here today amid tight security. The polling was by and large peaceful barring a few minor clashes between the HVP and Congress workers.

The polling was brisk in the morning, as people queued up outside the booths to avoid blistering heat. Though the polling picked up in the afternoon, there were reports of tension in some villages as aggressive supporters of rival parties tried to enter the polling stations. However, the presence of a large number of policemen saved the situation.

Former education minister Phul Chand Molana was arrested in the morning from Harikote village on Hisar-Mangali road. He was proceeding towards Adampur along with his ten supporters in two vehicles. He was taken to Sadar Police Station and released later on the intervention of warrant officer of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, according to sources.

Tempers ran high as Congress and HVP activists exchanged hot words at Vishwas School (booth number 20). The situation was, however, defused by the timely intervention of SSP, Jind, Rabhir Sharma, who was on special duty here. Both sides accused each other of carrying arms for booth-capturing.Later, former union minister Jai Prakash, who was the election agent of an Independent candidate, tried to enter the same booth. He was forced to leave the polling booth by the SSP, who threatened him with arrest.

Meanwhile, three persons were injured in Bhagla village in a clash between Congress and HVP activists. The injured activists were identified as Fateh Singh, Balwan and Lakhan.

Another highlight of the polling was the presence of Bhajan Lal, Hari Singh and Ajay Chautala simultaneously at booth number 20. The former chief minister claimed that the polling was going on peacefully, while Ajay Chautala alleged rigging with official connivance.

Reports of clashes between Congress and HVP activists poured in from Balasamand. However, senior officers prevented the situation from taking an explosive turn.

The district administration had made elaborate security arrangements. About 100 persons from various places were rounded up by the police since yesterday night. They had come from Faridabad, Gurgaon, Sonepat, Sirsa and Bathinda.

The police had erected 45 checkposts around the Mandi Adampur Assembly segment. The vehicles were thoroughly checked before being allowed entry.
