MUMBAI, JUNE 18: Two key associates of gangster Suresh Manchekar were killed in separate encounters with the police in Thane district early this morning. In the first incident, police laid a trap for Manchekar's henchman Madhukar alias Bandu Govind More at 2 am, acting on a tip-off that he was to visit a locality at Ganeshwadi off Eastern Express Highway near Thane.

About two-and-a-half hours later, four persons were seen moving towards the identified locality. Police said that when More found himself cornered, he fired at inspector Kailash Dawkar, who returned the fire, seriously injuring the gangster. But More's three associates escaped under cover of darkness. The gangster was rushed to Thane's government hospital, but was declared dead before admission. Police have recovered a countrymade revolver and four live cartridges.

More (25) had been involved in the murder of Pappu Agarwal, Praful Koli and Kishore Koli, all builders from Kalyan. He was also named in the murder of Dombivli builders Amul Bhagwatand Girish Sawant. More looked after the Manchekar gang's operations in Thane-Kalwa area.

In the second incident, a police squad noticed four men moving suspiciously near LIC Building in Dombivli's MIDC area. When they were asked to identify themselves, three of them fired at the police squad. When they returned fire, police said, one of the gangsters was seriously injured, while his aides escaped. The gangster was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared dead before admission. He was identified as Das Narayan Nair, a close aide of Manchekar.
