MUMBAI, June 18: Policing the Net? Not exactly. Rather, the Mumbai police plan to use the Internet to improve their efficiency by posting a website www.mumbaipolice.com.The site, launched by chief minister Manohar Joshi, is divided into six sections. These include the history of the police, their powers and functions, a `Zone X' section detailing case histories and lists of wanted criminals, as well as a section extolling the virtues of the profession. The site also offers the public advice on how to deal with crises and provides a hotline.
Joshi claimed that the site would help the police collect information about criminal activities and improve their track record. Police Commissioner R H Mendonca said the site was a part of efforts to educate citizens and bring them closer to the force. ``It will help people understand our work better,'' he said. Admitting that the facility is not accessible to the common man, he said Mohalla committees could be tapped to use the site.
