Punjab Police win title

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, June 18: Punjab Police humbled defending champions Punjab State Electricity Board, Patiala 2-1 to wear the crown of the 29th Hot Weather Football tournment which concluded at Paddal Stadium in Mandi today.

Punjab Police were down in the fifth minute but recovered to draw level before half time and then snatched the winner seven minutes from close. The policemen thus avenged the defeat they had suffered last year in the final at the same venue.

While Gurdish Singh scored for PSEB, Punjab Police got the goals through Narinder Kumar and Khushwant Singh. Punjab Police enjoyed more of the exchanges in the second half and after a series of raids were rewarded towards the close when Khuswant headed in the winner.

PSEB goal keeper Jatinder effected some good saves and his performances earned him the best player of the tournament award.

The ground was slipery and heavy following showers during the day, but PSEB were quick to to make a rousing start as in the fifth minute Gurdish Singh produced a fine shot which gave no chance to goalkeeper Satish Kumar.

Narinder however equalised before the interval when he headed the ball in. During the tournament Narinder Kumar scored four goals and all through headers.

Punjab Police did more of the attacking in the second and PSEB were forced to defend. Narinder's cross went begging while a hot by Harnek saved by Jatinder. Harnek dispatched a sizzling shot which struck the bar. Narinder's effort also went in vain.

However seven minutes from close Khuswant struck the winning goal. The prizes were given away by Thakur Roop Singh, forest minister Himachal Pradesh. He announced a grant of Rs 15,000 to the organisers out of his discretionary funds.

Hamirpur win
