2 killed, 50 injured in mishap

SURAT, June 18: Two women labourers died on the spot and at least 50 were injured, a dozen of them seriously, when the tractor in which they were travelling was hit by a Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation bus beside Navagam Patia near Jalalpore on the Navsari Gandevi state highway, about 10 kms from Navsari city , the police said. Sixty manual labourers were travelling in the tractor trailer when the accident occurred, the police added.

The injured have been admitted to New Civil Hospital and Parsi General Hospital at Navsari and the New Civil Hospital in the city for treatment.Officials on duty at the Jalalpore police station -- where a case has been registered -- said that the bus (GJ 15 Z 4522) rammed into the tractor (GBS 839) head on killing two women Vimlaben Arjunbhai (14) and Babitaben Revabhai (17) on the spot.

According to Dr Chhaya Rupare, of the Parsi General Hospital, 36 injured were admitted to the Parsi General hospital after the accident took place today morning.

Later two of them, including the driver of the bus A T Betkar, were shifted to the New Civil hospital in the city in a serious condition and 25 were discharged after treatment.

While 16 injured were admitted to the New Civil hospital at Navsari, three were later shifted to the city and another three were discharged after medication.

Jalalpore PSI N V Kathadia, who is investigating into the case, has registered cases under sections 304 (a), 279, 337 as well as sections of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Kathadia further stated that all the manual labourers present in the tractor were from Navagam taluka in Maharashtra and had come to Navsari district on a labour contract work.
