Aloria empowered to list spill over works

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, June 18: The Standing Committee of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), at a meeting held on Thursday under the chairmanship of N V Patel, authorised the municipal commissioner to prepare a list of spill over civic works. This decision is seen as a step towards carrying out civic works from the councillors' quota and the fodwari budget in time.

And armed with powers, the commissioner will no longer have to await approval of the Committee. In the present system, civic works which are not completed at the end of the financial year are carried forward in the next year.

Seeking the Committee's approval led to a delay of nearly two to three months in starting the work, as with no details available, including the estimate of each work, the project had to be cleared all over again.

Representatives of the administrative and the elected wings in the past had tried several methods to complete the works on time. However, not much success was achieved due to the alleged slow pace of work carried out by the administration and delay caused by councillors in submitting the lists.Ever since the budget heads were introduced in 1992-93 the works have been carried forward. For 1998-999, the spill over of 1997-98 is nearly Rs 6 crore.

Aloria had mooted the proposal with a view to do away with the delay caused in passing the spill over works and enable the contractors to get paid for the projects they had undertaken earlier.
