Days of "Great Satan" may be over, US to build bridges with Iran
The corrosive animosity between a country which accused the other of being the womb of international terrorism and was in turn denounced as the Great Satan may soon be ending. The United States on Wednesday made its first significant overture to Iran 20 years after its support to the despotic Shah engendered Ayatollah Khameini's 1979 Islamic revolution that changed the geopolitics of the region.

EC, Delhi Govt headed for spat
The Election Commission and the Delhi Government are heading for a spat just before the Assembly elections. While the EC had earlier directed all state governments to computerise their electoral rolls, the Delhi Government is yet to prepare clear and easily accessible rolls. Delhi, according to the EC, is lagging behind in all pre-poll preparations -- from preparing electoral rolls software to completing the I-cards programme.

India can produce over 400 N-arms, says Jane's
India's potential nuclear arsenal is bigger than Britain's and in the same league as the French and Chinese, Jane's Intelligence Review has reported. Pakistan, however, exhausted a significant part of its meagre arsenal in last month's nuclear tests and the poor performance of its weapons revealed the country's strategic nuclear weakness, the respected military magazine said.

SBI nets Rs 1,861 cr profit
The State Bank of India on Thursday reported a net profit of Rs 1861.20 crore for 1997-98, up 40% from the previous year's Rs 1329.30 crore, buoyed by a Rs 964-crore write back of excess depreciation, Rs 800 crore growth in income from treasury operations and 2.5% dip in operating expenses. However, operating profit increased by only 3.15% against the 12.1% growth in the previous fiscal.
