Step up anti-pollution drive, orders HC
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
BANGALORE, June 23: The Karnataka High Court has directed the Bangalore city traffic police to step up the drive against polluting diesel vehicles. While commending the police for the measures taken to check vehicular pollution, Justice M F Saldanah took a serious view of the ``poor performance'' of traffic constables while discharging their duties. Pointing at the ineffectiveness of the lane system, he directed the police to launch a special drive against two-wheelers which were often found cutting lanes. The court also directed the traffic police to strictly adhere to the rule of carrying not more than six school children in autorickshaws. It asked the BMTC to provide school buses at concessional rates and asked schools to take advantage of this offer. The court also asked that politicians desist from intervening in the enforcement work of the traffic department. For those affected by the ban on animal-driven carts on the city's arterial roads, the court asked the government to provide them withfinancial assistance to buy three-wheelers.
