Total recall -- Day 13

Group G: Romania 2 England 1

Goals: Romania: Moldovan 46th; Petrescu 90th; England: Owen 84th;

Bookings: Romania: Hagi 4th; Popescu 45th; Ciobotariu 79th; Marinescu 90th

90 minutes in 30 words: Dan the man stole the glory from the boy Owen on an evening that England's defence will want to forget. Pedestrian in the first half and chasing Hagi's shadow, England improved hugely in the second, and though defeat will be hard to take, a draw against Colombia will be enough to take England into a likely tie with Argentina.

Boy done good: Gheorge Hagi. The Maradona of the Carpathians made England's midfield look about as mobile as the Pennines in the first half, and despite the attentions of a determined David Batty, utterly dictated the pace of the game. Only when Hagi was withdrawn did England get into the match.

Two left feet: Graeme Le Saux and David Seaman were equally culpable for Romania's winner, allowing Le Saux's Chelsea team-mate Dan Petrescu to steal in and poke the ball between Seaman'slegs.

Magic moment: In the 27th minute Adrian Ilie justified the pre-match hype of his talents, lifting an exquisite chip onto the face of the crossbar with David Seaman stranded.

Mr Sitter: Clear chances for England were few and far between, but Gary Neville could have shot from the edge of the six-yard box, choosing instead to square the ball to a Romanian defender.

Shiver the timbers: As well as Ilie's chip, Owen hit the outside of the far post in stoppage time.

Cheered: Michael Owen's appearance, and his goal, were greeted uproariouslyby the thousands of England fans in the Stade Municipal. Come the end however, few were cheering.

Jeered: Teddy Sheringham's every misplaced pass was greeted with derision.Turning point: The withdrawal of Hagi gave England hope, but in the end a crass defensive mistake gave Petrescu the final say.

Ref-er-ee!: The postman from Marseilles showed no bias despite having his round smashed up last week, and let the game flow in a way not seen since last week's redmist.

Terrace talk: England: "Bring on Michael Owen. Again."

Romania: "You're going out - with Tunisia."

Group G: Colombia 1 Tunisia 0

Goals: Preciado 83rd

Bookings: Colombia: Santa 18th; Tunisia: Bouazizi 16th

90 minutes in 30 words: A tentative start to the match gave way to fast, exciting play from both teams. Both goalkeepers sweated in the 31 degree heat of the Montpelier stadium. Columbia win by a single, crucial goal.

Boy done good: Sharp and strong opportunities created by Tunisia's Ben Slimane - showing his Bundesliga class.

Two left feet: Where we might have expected two left hands from the goalkeepers, both held their space well. Mistakes were due to heat and exhaustion and forgiven.

Magic moment: It had to be the goal - bringing life to a match beginning to loose its pace.

Mr Sitter: Adel Sellimi two yards from the mouth of the goal completely miskicked, allowing the Colombians to clear. Had the Colombians not cleared it, Sellimi probably would have.

Cheered: LeiderPreciado's goal, quickly followed by his disallowed second goal set the yellow of the Colombians fans singing and waving their flags.

Jeered: The Tunisian manager for substituting Ben Ahmed for Zoubele Baya in 74th minute. Other tired legs could have been replaced with more effect.

Turning point: The Colombian goal. Upped the stakes in the last ten minutes of the game and renergised the game just when it needed it.

Ref-er-ee!: Despite many free kicks, the referee kept the pace up throughout. A job well done.

Terrace talk: Colombia: "Time to focus on Lens"

Tunisia: "When's the next boat to Tunis?"
