SURAT, June 23: Hundreds of striking secondary and higher secondary teachers from various city schools took out a huge procession on Tuesday to press for wages on par with their central government counterparts and protection to teachers declared surplus.About 2,500 teachers were joined by the non-teaching staff and resolved at the end of their procession to continue their strike till their just demands were met.
Carrying placards and shouting slogans they wound their way from the Surat railway station to the Chowk Bazar in response to the call for agitation given by their state-level federation. The procession culminated at Gandhi Baug into a meeting. President of Surat City Secondary Teachers' Association Laxmanbhai Patel, convenor of co-ordinating committee of Surat K I Desai, Ishwarbhai Solanki and Kishorbhai Bhatt addressed the teachers and exhorted them to carry on their fight till their demands were met.
Patel said the state government's reluctance to change its stand should be countered with such agitations and show of strength. He called upon the teachers to join all programmes announced by the co-ordination committee.
