Uplinking facility no threat to DD, says Naqvi
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PANAJI, JUNE 25: Satellite channels which have just been permitted to uplink from Indian soil will not pose any threat to Doordarshan, Minister of State for Information Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said here on Thursday.Addressing a press conference, the minister who is vacationing in Goa, said Doordarshan's primary objective is to promote Indian culture. He insisted that Indian culture today is under threat from increased Western programming being beamed into the country. As part of the `clean-up' of the system, Naqvi said the structure of All India Radio and Doordarshan will be revamped by the Vajpayee government. He also felt that permitting satellite channels to uplink from Indian soil would help the government regulate their functioning. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
