VADODARA, June 25: Sri Jagannath Rathyatra Mahotsav will be celebrated by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness by taking out a grand rathyatra from the Vadodara railway station to the Polo ground on Friday.The procession, according to ISCKON, is held in commemoration of Lord Krishna's visit to Kurushetra from Dwarka Puri along with his brother Balaram and sister Subhadradevi.
An elephant and a horse will form the first part of the yatra. The grand chariot, which is 22 feet long and 14 feet wide, has a collapsing canopy. It rises to a height of 35 feet when fully open but can be lowered to avoid hitting overhanging wires and other obstructions .
Mayor Ratilal Desai will inaugurate the procession at 2.30 p.m. at the railway station. Following in the footsteps of the Maharaja of Puri, the mayor will sweep the road in front of the rath with a golden broom. Vadodara MP Jayaben Thakkar will be the chief guest on the occasion.
The rathyatra will be welcomed by people lining both sides of the procession route, who can offer arati and present fruits and flowers, apart from having a darshan. A special reception will be held by citizens in the Madan Zampa locality.
The yatra will pass through Kala Ghoda, Kamati Baugh, Raopura Tower, Gandhi Nagar Gruh, Bhagat Singh Chowk, Dandia Bazar, Fire Brigade headquarters, Raj Mahal Road, Lal Court, before ending at the Kevdabaug Baithak Mandir.
Elaborate security arrangements have been made by police to ensure that yatra passes off without incident. More than 700 security personnel, besides police officers, will be on duty along the yatra route. Armed police personnel will be posted at important points, particularly, in communally sensitive localities, with walkie-talkie sets, while armed policemen with binoculars and wireless sets will man high-rise points.
The entire yatra route has been divided into seven sectors for convenience of security, with each sector being supervised by one police inspector. Two deputy commissioners of police and four assistant commissioners of police, besides 18 police inspectors, will look after the overall arrangements.
