Panther holds up traffic on Tirumala ghat road

TIRUPATI, June 25: Pilgrims coming down the winding Tirumala second ghat road on Wednesday night were forced to a halt by an unusual traffic blockade - a panther perched on the parapet wall. A jeep driver spotted the big cat first, and screeched to a halt. Traffic built up behind him, but the panther stayed unmoving for about 10 minutes. It finally relented and jumped into the surrounding thickets. The TTD's Forest Officer and his staff beat the animal back into the forests with drums and crackers. The panther population in the region is said to have gone up substantially.
