Boy alleges third degree by police

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, June 26: A 13-year-old boy from Vidyanagar in Pimpri yesterday moved an application before the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) and the Police Commissioner alleging that he was assaulted by two constables from the Mohan Nagar police chowkey.

In his application, Umesh Bajirao Zombade has alleged that his left hand was fractured when the police beat him up after one of his neighbours lodged a complaint against him on June 21.

Besides punching and kicking Umesh viciously, the policemen also dragged him to the Mohan Nagar police chowkey where he was beaten up with sticks, Umesh alleged.

Umesh has produced a medical certificate issued in his name from the Sassoon Hospital on June 22. According to the certificate, Umesh was examined at the hospital on June 22. He had sustained abrasion to right scapular region and basic blackish colour and abrasion on left wrist in a case of alleged assault.

Umesh, who studies in seventh standard, stays in Vidyanagar along with his mother and two brothers. He and his mother Kaushalyabai had allegedly got involved in a heated argument with a woman over petty reasons on Sunday morning. The neighbour had lodged a complaint against Umesh and Kaushalyabai at the Mohan Nagar police chowkey on the same day.

Umesh says later in the afternoon, the woman brought the two policemen at his house. The policemen allegedly thrashed Umesh at his house before ordering him and his mother to accompany them to the police chowkey where Umesh claims he was beaten up with sticks.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Uddhav Kamble said he has already started inquiring into the matter. He said he has questioned the in-charge of Mohan Nagar police Chowkey P S Salke who has denied the allegations that the boy was thrashed by policemen. However, a through inquiry will be conducted in this connection, he added.
