Total recall / Day 17

Pre-Quarter final: Brazil 4 Chile 1

Goals: Brazil: Cesar Sampaio 11 & 27, Ronaldo 45 (pen) & 70; Chile: Salas 68.

Bookings: Brazil: Leonardo 45, Cafu 90; Chile: Fuentes 36, Tapia 45.

90 minutes in a nutshell: The first 10 minutes suggested a shock was not out of the question, but how they deceived. Once the deadlock was broken, Brazil rode roughshod over a Chilean team who didn't play badly but were powerless to prevent what was happening to them. Clinical in the first period, exciting in the second, the world champions bounced back from defeat to send a chilling message to the pretenders to their throne.

Boy done good: Roberto Carlos created havoc whenever he got the ball. If he wasn't leathering it dangerously towards goal, he was beating opponents willy-nilly with pace and control. His may not have been the most accomplished of several outstanding Brazilian performances, but it was the most exciting.

Two left feet: Rivaldo embarked on a run from box to box, casually taking out the wholeChilean team on the way. He passed to Junior Baiano who had time to set the seal on a move which would have been remembered for all time. The ball clanked between his hoofs and the beauty of the preceding run was sullied forever.

Magic moment: Rivaldo's run.

Mr Sitter: Brazil could have had a hatful, so there's a nice selection to pick from. When Bebeto ruined Roberto Carlos' good work by letting the ball run under his foot with only the keeper to beat, he set the precedent for Brazil's second-half profligacy.

Shiver the timbers: Ronaldo smashed Nelson Tapia's left-and post with a superb drive and watched in agony as the ball ran along the face of the goal.Turning point: Cesar Sampaio's 11th-minute header made sure that there would be no shock result. Before that, Brazil's edgy display suggested that there would be a closer game than the one we subsequently got.

Ref-er-ee! Monsieur Batta did well not to send off Tapia when he dragged Ronaldo down for Brazil's penalty. Tapia wouldn't have deserved itand, anyway, it kept the score in hand.

Terrace talk: Brazil: "Look, we don't care how well you've played, just win it."

Chile: "Hello? Hello? Does anyone remember us? We were out on the pitch, too..." Pre-Quarter Final: Italy 1 Norway 0

Goals: Italy: Vieri 18.

Bookings: Italy: Moriero 38, Di Biagio 83, Maldini 90;

Norway: H Flo 35, Mykland 54, Rekdal 63.

90 minutes in a nutshell: Italy played no better and no worse than the Norwegians, but two deciding rubbers went their way. Christian Vieri beat off a challenge from Dan Eggen to coolly roll the ball inside the left-hand post and Pagliuca denied Tore Andre Flo's superb header. Cesare Maldini, the World Cup's oldest playboy, goes through to the quarters, while his counterpart Egil Olsen, the tournament's highest-profile communist, goes home.

Boy done good: Luigi Di Biagio strode around the centre circle dictating play. And, it's unlikely that the ball Di Biagio fed to Vieri for the goal will be bettered this summer.

Two left feet: Flocaused Italy no end of trouble down the right wing and forced Pagliuca into making a wonder save with a second-half header. But when set free during the second half with just one to beat, he stood still on the spot until a posse of Italian defenders came along and took the ball away from him, making sure to do it quietly so as not to awake the poor dear.

Magic moment: The impressive Eggen chipped a ball over the Italian back line to Erik Mykland who immediately whipped his cross back into the box. Flo rose majestically to power a header down but Pagliuca scooped the ball off the line with one-hand, a save as important to Italy as Vieri's goal. Top football all round.

Mr Sitter: A perfect in-swinging Stig Bjornebye corner evaded every Italian body, falling towards Henning Berg who was unmarked on the far post with an open net a yard away from him. It skittered off his head for a corner.

Turning point: Pagliuca's save -- scooping it off the line with one hand -- 20 minutes from time. Thereafter Norway'schallenge began to fade.

Ref-er-ee! Francesco Moriero took down a high ball whilst in space near the halfway line, instantly creating a two-on-one counter-attack which would have probably ended in a goal. Unluckily for the Inter midfielder, Mr Heynemann saw a Norwegian defender in the same half of the field so sublime skill was rewarded with a booking for a high challenge.

Terrace talk: Italy: "Sorry, Egil, but some teams are more equal than others."

Norway: "Why can't we play Brazil every match?"
