PARIS, June 28: Brazil coach Mario Zagallo must have cursed his luck when injured veteran star striker Romario pulled out of the squad earlier this month. But little did he know that lurking in his mid-field was an undiscovered goalscoring gem in Cesar Sampaio.
Cesar who? was the response when he opened the scoring against Scotland in the opening match. Added to the fact the ball went in off his shoulder, it appeared his was a name that would remain steadfastly on the one goal mark.Chile had obviously been taken in like the rest of the world as the mid-fielder, who plays for Japanese league outfit Yokohama Flugels, returned from suspension with a vengeance and scored a double.
What was more impressive about the second goal was the calm way the 30-year-old, who had only scored three goals in 28 internationals before the tournament, reacted as the ball cannoned off Bebeto's foot.
The father of two, who is a devout Pentecostal Christian and spends more time in his knees than the opposing goalkeeper afterhe has scored thanking god for his goal, appeared to have reached a dead end in Japan.
After a six year spell with Brazilian first division outfit Santos, The Brazilian moved to Palmeiras, where he enjoyed domestic success. However, whether it was fellow J-Leaguer Dunga's promptings to Zagallo, who considers his captain's advice above those of the coaching staff, or simply answering his prayers, Sampaio earned a recall.
And in the past fortnight he has shown that you don't have to be a 30 million striker for Inter Milan to strike a rich vein.
