Brazil, Italy advance

Defending champions Brazil moved into the quarter-finals of the World Cup with a 4-1 victory over Chile at Paris last night.Italy had earlier booked a slot in the last eight with a 1-0 win over Norway at Marseille.

Cesar Sampaio and Ronaldo scored two goals apiece to put the Brazilians in command after their South American rivals did the early running. Brazil virtually ended the match as a contest by half-time after surging into a 3-0 lead but Marcelo Salas pulled one back for Chile to rekindle interest.

However, Ronaldo added a fourth within a minute to put the issue beyond doubt. Brazil now await the winners of the Denmark-Nigeria encounter. Christian Vieri scored the all-important goal in the first half to haul Italy into the quarter-finals where they will meet the winners of the France-Paraguay clash.
