Lanka drops plan for Presidential polls; council elections in August
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
COLOMBO, JUNE 28: After a brief demonstration of political showmanship by both the ruling coalition and the opposition, the government has rejected the idea of Presidential elections and decided instead to hold the provincial council elections as scheduled in the first week of August. The state-run Daily News reported on Saturday that President Chandrika Kumaratunga's government had decided to go ahead with the provincial elections as opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe ``had failed to give an undertaking that the United National Party would support the government to obtain two-thirds majority needed to change the Constitution and postpone the polls''. The decision was apparently taken at a special session of the cabinet held on Friday to finalise a course of action regarding the elections. The report said the ruling PA coalition would announce its candidates for the provincial council elections next week. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
