Albright goes ballistic, dismisses India's protests

REUTERS
BEIJING, June 28: United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright today brushed off Indian criticism of a Sino-American statement on South Asian security and said Beijing had moved forward in pledging to halt missile cooperation with Pakistan.

Albright accused the Indians of acting as if an international call for a halt to nuclear testing ``doesn't apply to them, that everybody is out of step with them.'' ``They had better stop dismissing statements like this because they are dismissing what is a very evident signal from the rest of the world that what they are doing has not gained them stature and clearly has not gained them security either.''

US and Chinese leaders Bill Clinton and Jiang Zemin issued a two-page statement on the Indian subcontinent after their summit yesterday, prompting India to accuse the two of hypocrisy.
