Oppn bid to oust Govt will come a cropper: BJP leader

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CALCUTTA, JUNE 28: The Opposition unity to oust the BJP-led coalition cannot be sustained politically for long, said J Krishnamurthy, one of the national vice-presidents of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Saying that the ``success of Opposition plot to dislodge the Vajpayee Government would only lead to another mid-term poll and in such eventuality the people would punish the plotters,'' the BJP vice-president said: ``The Opposition parties are not ready to face people's wrath.''

Krishnamurthy, who was addressing a press conference here this afternoon at the state party office, said: ``We're confident that the Opposition move to dislodge us will not meet with success.''

When asked how he is so confident about the survival of the BJP-led coalition in face of AIADMK leader, Jayalalitha's threat to withdraw support, Krishnamurthy claimed: ``In another month or two she (Jayalalitha) will learn the constrains of Article 365 and the problems will gradually disappear.''

Asked if the BJP got some hints thatJayalalitha would finally give up her demand on the use of Article 356 on the DMK Government in Tamil Nadu, Krishnamurthy said: ``This is how a coalition government must work and we are confident that the AIADMK will finally realise this.''

He, however, dismissed the idea that the BJP's continuous wrangles with its allies for the last 100 days left the party's image soiled with the public.

He said the party is following its national agenda, unlike the United Front's Common Minimum Programme, which made a serious effort to work towards a consensus politics and even strived to invite Opposition parties to cooperate on sensitive national issues. ``This keeps our image intact with the people,'' the BJP leader asserted.

Listing this as an achievement, Krishnamurthy added: ``For the first time in the last 50 years of Indian democracy, we have tried to introduce a new culture of political willingness to move with the Opposition on national issues and give up the politics of confrontations.''

Leaning heavilyon the LF Government in West Bengal for distorting the political implications of the Central team, he averred: ``In 1992, West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu demanded imposition of Article 356 on all state BJP Governments, and nobody blames him for that. But when a Central team came to meet the representatives of the state government on law and order issue, you make an issue out of it.''

Krishnamurthy was referring to a question on the controversy which the recent visit of a central team left behind. The team visited to probe the alleged `CPM-sponsored violence' in West Bengal before and after the recent panchayat elections. He asked the LF Government to place before the people an `accomplishment report' which ``will tell the people about the performance of the Marxists.''

Unemployment and industrial backwardness, which the CPM-led LF thrust upon West Bengal for the last 21 years, should be exposed, the BJP leader said.
