BJP hardliners against appeasing Jayalalitha
The Jayalalitha problem has brought into focus the confusion in the BJP on how to handle the AIADMK general secretary. While moderates like Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Deputy chairman of the Planning Commission Jaswant Singh appear to be in favour of giving her the importance she values, hardliners in the party are arguing against any further appeasement and "pampering".

IB lists Advani as `most threatened'
The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has recommended upgradation of security cover provided to Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani after concluding that he was the most "threatened" politician in the country. Following the review of the threat perception faced by Advani, the IB recommended to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) that he should join the select list of politicians whose bullet-proof cars are fitted with a high-frequency jammer.

J&K is bankrupt, but the state govt does not seem to care
In Jammu & Kashmir, developmental works have come to a halt and nothing has moved in the state for the past fortnight. Bills for Rs 591 crore have accumulated with the treasuries. Besides the Rs 120-crore salary bill for this month is also due shortly. The Jammu and Kashmir Bank has refused to extend overdraft facilities to the Government, which is a major share-holder in the bank.

Quake kills 108 in Turkey
An earthquake that rattled Adana (Turkey) has killed at least 108 people and injured about 1,000. Among those killed yesterday were 37 people who lived in the slums of Adana, a city of one million, according to Deputy Governor Ardahan Totuk. At least 30 people were reported dead in the nearby town of Ceyhan, the site of an oil terminal.
