Full statehood for Delhi -- Advani

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, June 29: In keeping with its promise in its National Agenda for governance, the BJP-led Government today decided to grant full statehood to Delhi. It also moved a step closer to fulfilling its assurances on creating the new states of Uttaranchal, Vananchal and Chattisgarh.

Union Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani, while addressing reporters after the Cabinet meeting tonight, announced the Government's decision to set up a committee comprising a group of ministers which would look into the boundaries to be included in the proposed state of Uttaranchal, and to go into the financial effects and measures required regarding the creation of Vananchal and Chattisgarh and the rest of the states.

The committee, Advani said, would submit its report ``early.'' ``I hope the bills on the proposed states would be introduced in the current session of Parliament,'' he added.

A controversy has arisen of late with the Shiromani Akali Dal, an important ally of the present Government, joining the demand to keepthe district of Udham Singh Nagar out of the proposed state of Uttaranchal. The Bill prepared by the Union Home Ministry, it may be mentioned, has identified it as one of the 12 districts of the new state. The Samata Party, another important ally of the present ruling combine, has also come out with a demand to provide several thousand crore rupees as compensation once Vananchal was carved out of Bihar.
